Commentary: The image is of Joseph and Mary on their way to Bethlehem, guided by an angel. Inside is the script for the Christmas posadas, in the standardized version compiled by Antonio Vanegas Arroyo in the 19th century. The Vanegas Arroyo publishing house printed the chapbook in many editions over the years, several of them illustrated by José Guadalupe Posada. So this edition, dated 1948, is a Méndez homage to Posada, as well as a rare collaboration with the Vanegas Arroyo family. (Peter Schneider)
Cataloging note: Vanegas removed the title text that had been carved by Méndez as well as the side margins of the image, probably in order to fit the image to the pre-determined dimensions of the chapbook. The chapbook image measures 11.4 x 9.7 cm. and the full sheet (open) 14.3 x 19.5 cm.
