Commentary: With the history of Mexico on his mind, Méndez made the lithographic poster, Homenaje a Benito Juárez (Homage to Benito Juárez) during the same year as the TGP created the portfolio Estampas de la Revolución Mexicana. Artist Jules Heller, then a guest artist at the TGP, remembered watching Méndez produce the print for a celebration in Juárez’s honor: “…it flowed from his brush so freely, one would think that the brush itself contained a memory of the face of Juárez.” As an iconic depiction of the most revered president of Mexico, Méndez’s calligraphic portrait of Juárez portrays the essential elements of the face that every Mexican would know from early childhood.
